Match Preview: Walsall

11 February 2022

Rovers look to make it three wins in four games as we travel to the midlands to face Walsall this weekend.

Micky Mellon’s side will be backed by a packed-out away end on Saturday afternoon with over 1200 of the SWA making the trip to the Banks’s Stadium.

It’s yet another quick turnaround from Tuesday’s midweek win over Swindon Town which saw a Paul Glatzel tap-in and a brace from Kane Hemmings give Rovers a 3-0 victory.

Walsall on the other hand are coming into the game off the back of seven straight defeats in Sky Bet League Two after parting ways with Head Coach Matt Taylor earlier this week.

Team News:

Jay Spearing will still be ruled out with a knee injury. Josh McPake returned to the bench after a hip injury.

One to Watch: George Miller

With eight goals to his name this season, Barnsley loanee George Miller had an impressive start to the season scoring four goals in his first five league games for the Saddlers.

The 23-year-old has had his fair share of loans spells including stints at Wrexham, Bradford City and Scunthorpe United after coming through the academy at Bury FC.

His last goal came against Bradford in late January in what has been a tough run for Walsall of late.

Interim Head Coach:  Neil McDonald

Neil McDonald and Mat Sadler are taking charge of Walsall’s clash with Tranmere after the process of finding a new permanent head coach is underway following the sacking of Matt Taylor.

McDonald has a wealth of experience in coaching, having coached under Sam Allardyce at the likes of Bolton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United in their respective years in the Premier League.

He has also managed the likes of Carlisle United, Blackpool and Swedish club, Ostersunds.

With the club in desperate need of a win, McDonald will be hoping to steer away from the relegation zone as they currently sit four points above the drop zone after losing to bottom side Scunthorpe United last time out.
