Cammell Lairds 0-4 Tranmere Rovers

19 July 2022

A young Rovers side took a five minute trip down the road to the Kirkland Stadium to face local side Cammell Lairds FC.

Andy Parkinson fielded Tranmere’s newly put together development team in their first outing of the 2022/23 campaign.

An energetic start by the lads in yellow paid off after Lewis Lyall opened the scoring with a stunning finish from 25 yards after just five minutes.

Rovers and Lairds both with chances in a pretty even battle, both teams with a number of chances that were defended well to keep the score line positive to Tranmere.

It took 30 minutes for Rovers to come close to a second when an Arthur Lomax free kick was palmed away by the Lairds keeper.

Jake Burton doubles the lead after Jack Williams beats his man and drives the ball up the pitch before finding Burton in plenty of space in the box to score Rovers’ second of the night.

Sam Taylor looks to get the third of the evening after finding the back of the net after Burton's shot is deflected into the number nines path but it's later ruled offside denying Rovers the chance to extend their lead.

Rovers get a third when Arthur Lomax controls a pass from Sam Taylor and lobs the Lairds number one to find the back of the net.

Heading into the final five minutes and a fresh legged James Flight chases the ball down from the halfway line to the corner flag and wins the ball off the defended, his first shot is saved but not giving up he slots the deflection past the keeper.

A good night all around for the young side and a great sign of things to come.
