Match Report: Barrow 1-0 Tranmere Rovers

6 January 2024

Tranmere Rovers lost out to Barrow in a tough encounter on the road.

Two changes to the Rovers eleven from last time out saw Connor Wood and Brad Walker return for James Norris and Rob Apter, after the latter’s return to Blackpool.

The opening exchanges were relatively even, Rovers catching the hosts on the break on a couple of occasions which included Kieron Morris firing into the side netting early on.

The hosts came close shortly after from a free-kick which was sent into the box before Rory Feely fired over the bar.

Neither team managed to grab hold of the game in the first-half exchanges, with half-chances for both, but nothing to show for it at the break.

Harvey Saunders limped off at the break which meant Charlie Jolley replaced him at half time.

Nigel Adkins made a further change shortly after as James Norris replaced Lee O’Connor at right-back.

Norris made a crucial intervention not long after coming on, racing back well to prevent a Barrow counter-attack.

Rovers looked to grab the game by the scruff of the neck in the second half and Connor Jennings headed just wide from a Regan Hendry cross after some slick passing play.

Whitfield provided plenty of pace up front for Barrow throughout, but was matched for it by Turnbull as the hosts looked to break and the defender slid in well.

The hosts broke the deadlock on 81 minutes when Dean Campbell curled a shot into the far corner from just outside the box.

Rovers pushed for an equaliser and Morris went close when his shot from the edge of the box was blocked with four minutes left.

Josh Hawkes caused problems after coming off the bench, striking the inside of the post in stoppage time before seeing another shot fly narrowly wide.

Rovers pushed on late on to snatch an equaliser, and were caught on the break when Barrow had the ball in the back of the net, but play was called back for offside.

Despite a late Tranmere push, Barrow ultimately took the points.
