Micky's Swindon reaction

17 August 2021

Micky Mellon feels it was a hard-fought point for his Tranmere Rovers side in their goalless draw away at Swindon Town on Tuesday night.

Rovers remain unbeaten in Sky Bet League Two and are yet to concede in the league and Mellon says there were positives for his men.

Mellon said: “We’re not happy with a draw, we came to try and win the game, but we fought, and we kept going and we did the necessary and created lots of chances.

“It was an end-to-end tussle for both sides, and roared on by our crowd, we stuck at it. I thought in the first-half, we stuck at it and we started reasonably well.

“But we came in at half-time and I said let’s get on the ball and put our system out there and cause them problems, and I think that we did that. We had a lot of opportunities, we had loads of energy, we defended well and kept battling away, so it was a hard-fought point on the road, we came here for three, but we need to pass the ball better when the opportunity comes or be that bit more clinical in the 18-yard box.

“Their keeper to be fair to him, as well as my keeper, has made some really top draw saves because there were good opportunities for both teams.

“We’re looking for the positives out of that, we defended very well, and my keeper made some good saves, and their keeper has made some really good saves as well, so it was a good tussle.

“The basics of being a Tranmere player. Tranmere players have to work hard and put shifts in, and represent the club properly, it’s what this group will do and it’s important that we have a group who will do that.

“We had to be better on the ball in the second-half and we were. We created opportunities and got a lot of good balls into the box, We allowed them to have that overload at the back which sometimes you have to do, but we didn’t get caught up in that or get involved, we were aggressive and turned them over and we defended really well, and it was a really keenly fought game of football and it was two sides really going at it.

“The improvement I’m looking for is putting the ball in the back of the net. We are creating the opportunities, we’re getting into good areas, now can we get it in the net. All the other stuff, the defending and we showed that we have good players as well.”
