Clarke: "I love being out there playing"

4 October 2021

Match winner Peter Clarke praised the resilience of Tranmere Rovers in his post-match interview after his brace helped Rovers to a 2-1 win, a result which sees Micky Mellon's men extend their unbeaten run to four games in all competitions.

Clarke had opened the scoring in the first half, heading the ball past Crawley goalkeeper Glenn Morris after a delightful delivery by Kieron Morris. Crawley equalised early on in the second half with a Kwesi Appiah goal, but Rovers weren't to be denied and veteran Clarke found a winner late on in proceedings to earn Rovers the three points.

"It's always nice to get on the scoresheet! We gave ourselves a lead and I think we were in the ascendancy throughout the first half. We started the second half very well and then I would say we were in control of things.

"A bit of sloppy play allowed them to get back into the game, they got a little bit of impetus and probably felt like they could take something from the game. But, we've got good experience around we've got players who know the requirements of playing for this Football Club, we dusted ourselves off and we went again and thankfully we were able to get the second goal and see the game out then."

A key player for Rovers, Clarke spent more minutes on the pitch than any other player in the top four divisions of English football last season, he expressed his eagerness to maintain this record after firstly expressing his joy at being nominated for the North West player of the year award.

"It's nice to be recognised on a personal level, but ultimately to be recognised on a personal level you have got to do what's necessary when you're out there playing. But it's also massive credit to the rest of the lads I'm playing with, my teammates. It's not all down to me, I can't take full responsibility for that!

"In terms of playing more minutes than anyone else in the top four tiers, I'm delighted with that, it's lovely and if there's more of the same this season I'll be equally as happy. I want to be available as often as I possibly can be and I love being out there playing. It's great, I can't complain!"
