Match Preview | Newport County (A)

11 April 2024

Tranmere Rovers make the trip to Newport County on Saturday 13th April (3pm kick-off), looking to bounce back from defeat at home to Walsall last time out.

Nigel Adkins’ side face three more games as they bid to end the season strongly.

Team news:

Nigel Adkins confirmed in his pre-match interview that Jordan Turnbull has had surgery on his shoulder and will miss the remainder of the season, and Brad Walker has had an ankle problem which has been fixed with a view of getting back fit for the start of pre-season.

Kieron Morris will miss out with a fractured nose, with Tom Davies, Connor Wood and Joe Yarney also set to miss out.

Ben Hockenhull has been recalled from his loan spell at Southport so will be available for selection.

One to watch: Will Evans

Welsh striker Evans has scored 23 goals this term for Newport including 20 in the league, placing him fourth in the division’s top scoring charts.

Evans played his youth football for Shrewsbury Town, before representing Cardiff Metropolitan University and Bala Town, prior to eventually going professional at the age of 24 with Newport in May 2022.

The 26-year-old scored at Prenton Park in our last meeting with Saturday’s opponents, so Nigel Adkins’ side will be well aware of his threat.

Manager: Graham Couglan

The 49-year-old has managed Newport since October 2022, following spells in charge of Bristol Rovers where he started his managerial career in 2018/19, Mansfield Town and Sheffield United’s under-23 side.

As a player, Coughlan spent much of his career with Plymouth Argyle, making 193 appearances for the Pilgrims, also enjoying spells with the likes of Sheffield Wednesday, Shrewsbury Town, Rotherham United and Scottish side Livingston.

Officials:

Referee - Craig Hicks

Assistant Referees - Samuel Fudge and Thomas Staten

Fourth Official - Oliver Spender

Hicks last refereed Tranmere in our 1-0 defeat at home to Northampton in the final game of last season.
