Match Preview | Newport County (H)

8 December 2023

Tranmere Rovers return to league action this Saturday, with Newport County the visitors to Prenton Park.

Nigel Adkins’ side are unbeaten in their last four matches in the division, including wins over Forest Green Rovers and Gillingham, as well as away draws with Sutton United and Mansfield Town.

Rovers’ impressive form saw the boss up for the League Two Manager of the Month award, while Rob Apter earned a Player of the Month nomination after scoring four goals in those games.

Newport County are 15th in the division with wins in their last two matches. They ended Stockport County’s long unbeaten run before picking up three points on the road at Morecambe.

Graham Coughlan’s men drew 1-1 with National League side Barnet in the second round of the Emirates FA Cup last weekend, with a replay set for next Tuesday night.

Team news:

Joe Starbuck is back on the grass after his ankle injury and is close to a return to full training.

Paul Lewis is also back on the grass but is still a couple of weeks away from joining in with the squad.

Kristian Dennis has been in training all week, having missed the Mansfield game last Tuesday.

The 26-year-old played for Cardiff Metropolitan University from 2016 to 2020, before signing for Bala where he found the net 24 times over two seasons.

He equalised for Newport against Morecambe in their last league match, which the Exiles went on to win 2-1.

Manager: Graham Coughlan

Graham Coughlan signed up at Rodney Parade in October 2022, and lifted the side to 15th in the table at the end of the campaign.

The Irishman began his managerial journey at Bristol Rovers in 2018, five years on from the conclusion of his two decade long senior playing career.

After 12 months in the Westcountry, the 49-year-old joined Mansfield Town before a short spell as a coach in Sheffield United’s youth setup.
